"Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity."
In this passage Paul writes we are to put on a "new self". We are to be dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and greed, which leads to idolatry (3:5), as well as anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech (3:8). We are to replace those evil attributes with a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another and forgiving each other - just as the Lord has forgiven us (3:12-13). But it doesn't end there. We are to cover all that - "put on" - love. He goes on to say that love is the perfect bond of unity.
It is hard to work closely with someone you don't like. But when you love the people you work with and enjoy the job you are doing you don't want to stop. What if we came together to worship and realized we have that perfect bond of love that unites us. I see it every time we come together - whether we are together inside the church house or outside the church house. That is why we are the church! When we leave the church building it stays on the lot. But the Holy Spirit continues to go with us as the church to the different places we each go. That bond keeps us united no matter how far apart we are from each other. That love allows us also to encourage, forgive, and serve. Something we more than likely would not do on our own.
Seize the opportunity to show love and replace all the evil Satan keeps trying to put in us with the love and power of the Holy Spirit already within us. Come to worship this Sunday with the perspective of showing love to each other and unity of Spirit - make a conscious effort to do so - then watch what happens.
